Season 3 will formally introduce Soldier Boy — one of the original superheroes that fought in World War II who will be played by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles.
The first episode’s title is a reference to Soldier Boy’s superhero team, Payback, an obvious parody of The Avengers. "Payback, in the world of our show, was the Seven before the Seven," Kripke told EW. "We will be exploring the history of that team and all the members in it.”We learned a bit about Soldier Boy’s backstory in Season 2; primarily that he was one of the first person that Vought founder Frederick Vought injected with the super-serum Compound V.
"Through the history of the supes, we can tell a little bit about the history of America and how we ended up in the current fraught position that we're in. Soldier Boy gives us an opportunity to do that," said Kripke. In the comic series, Soldier Boy’s Payback team included Stormfront (who was introduced in Season 2, a play on Thor), Eagle the Archer (also appeared briefly in Season 2, a Hawkeye parallel), Crimson Countess (a Scarlett Witch knockoff), Mind-Droid (that’s Vision), Swatto (Ant-Man, of course), and Tek Knight (a close proxy to Iron Man). Soldier Boy—always armed with his shield—is the Captain America of the group, albeit far less heroic.
Besides learning more about Soldier Boy and Payback, we know that Homelander will be a ”homicidal maniac” according to his actor Antony Starr.
