Jana
Bent
entered the US, UK, European and Canadian Rhythm Radio
markets in 2001 with her smash pop/reggae single,
“You So Fine”, on three Promo Only compilations that
grouped her with artistes such as Mary J. Blige, R.
Kelly and N’Sync. The single broke new ground for
Jana, preparing the way for a series of hits on her
sophomore album, ‘SHADOW GIRL’ that hit Jamaican
stores in December 2002.
‘SHADOW GIRL’,
an
enhanced CD released on the
Gypsy Music
Label, was produced by Grammy nominated, Rupert Bent
III, (currently Musical Director for
Sean Paul),
along with world renowned Producers, Sly Dunbar
and Jeremy Harding.
Her hot
collaboration with the unparalleled ‘Bounty
Killer’, on the fiercely defiant track “No
Regrets”, thrust Jana into the Jamaican urban
market and again onto two more international
compilations – Promo Only Rhythm Radio and
Chart Radio alongside artistes such as Christina
Aguilera, Angie Martinez, B2K and
Shaggy,
signalling a shift in Jamaican music history – Jamaican
pop met hardcore dancehall with smashing success and a
stream of accolades. The duo’s performance on the
biggest one-night show of the year, HotShots, in
December 2002 (which also featured
Shaggy and
Sean Paul),
catapulted Jana to the top of the agenda for
every Jamaican media house, giving her maximum coverage
of her every move, and making Jana Bent a
household name.
Then the
deals started rolling in: In January 2003, Killer and
Bent were signed to a major advertising campaign
with the Singer chain of stores, performing radio and
television commercials and appearing in newsprint and on
billboards across Jamaica. In May 2003, Jana inked a
Publishing Administration deal with New York-based
company, The Royalty
Network Inc. And, by January 2004, Jana had also
signed a European Distribution deal with the
French company, Nocturne, for her album, ‘SHADOW
GIRL’, now also available on
Amazon.com
and the Tower
Records websites.
Her move to Los
Angeles in February 2004 heralded the next exciting
phase of her career, as Jana began writing songs for
international artistes, in collaboration with Royalty
Network Producers, resulting in a placement of one of
her songs as a single on the debut album for
Bad Boy Records
ingénue, Jordan
McCoy. This in turn placed Jana on a higher
bracket for collaborations with top producers in the US,
such as Armando Colon (Busta Rhymes, Shaggy), Jimmy
Kendricks (Beyonce); and
Howie Hersh (Snoop Dogg)
She
has placed songs on MTV’s hit series, “The
Hills”, CW11 series “Privileged” and on the
soundtrack and trailer for the feature film, “Spring
Breakdown”. She continues to write and record songs
for international pop and R&B artistes and has started a
line of Jamaican edu-tainment products for children,
through her company, Reggae Pickney, which
combines early childhood educational themes in
delightful stories featuring the best reggae musicians
and artistes. The flagship product, a CD Storybook
entitled, “Shaggy Parrot and the Reggae Band”
features the voice of Shaggy and the music of
Sean Paul’s touring band, Badda Banz, led by
Musical Director for the band, Rupert Bent III.
This product has been officially added to the Jamaican
Early Childhood Education Curriculum Resource List and
is available in Jamaican stores and on the website
www.reggaepickney.com
Jana
has worked with the best in the business. She toured as
a singer, choreographer and dancer for
Shaggy for
a year and a half, and was dancer and choreographer in
his music videos, “Boombastic” and “In the
Summertime”. Jana toured with
Damian “Jr.
Gong” Marley as well as The Wailers, to
name a few. She has also danced in music videos for
Shabba Ranks, Terror Fabulous and Nadine
Sutherland among others, and appeared in a Coca
Cola ad and music video both done with Japanese pop
star, Toshi Kubota, and released in Japan.
Jana
received formal voice, theatre and dance training in
Washington D.C., Toronto and Jamaica, and has taught Hip
Hop and Modern Dance in Toronto. Jana’s debut
album, ‘CHASE THE SUN’, released in 1999, also
produced by Rupert Bent for the
Gypsy Music
label, was named ALBUM OF THE YEAR, 1999 by the
Jamaica Observer.
Jana’s
music video for the track “My Man Dat” featuring
Belinda may also be viewed on the ‘Shadow Girl’ CD, and
her website,

Jana is currently based
in Kingston, Jamaica, and continues to collaborate with
international writers and producers, to and to work on
other music related projects.
